organisational model which combines service delivery with influencing
for social change in a community framework with a view to facilitating
future ASO collaboration. DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: London Lighthouse is
committed to providing excellent care, support and facilities so people
living with HIV/AIDS can have control over their lives, and contribute
to key decisions about the organisation and its services. Employs approx

drop-in centre, cafe, counselling, creative and complementary therapies;
playgroups; after death service; education and training programmes;
research; policy development; campaigning; public information, advocacy,
consultancy and technical assistance. METHODS: Report is drawn from the
lessons learned from managing Britain's first major ASO since 1988
through an on-going review of management practice. LESSONS LEARNED:
participants will be presented with the key components contributing to
strength and success of project including; centrality of people with
HIV/AIDS; holistic approach; focus on self help and empowerment; clarity
about roles, responsibilities and lines of accountability linked with
lack of categorisation between helped and helpers; consistency in policy
and practice for users of services and workers; aim of parity in terms
and conditions of service between paid and unpaid workers; commitment to
diversity and to equality of opportunity; place of symbolism in
manifesting values; distinction in education/attitude changing work
between challenge and attack; value placed on partnership and joint
ventures; attention to managing ambiguity, loss and change.
